Word From The Captain

Welcome to THBC! Whether you are a prospective, current or former member of the Club, there will always be a place for you here.

The academic year 17/18 has been a fantastic one for the Club: we have seen more returning rowers and coxes than in a very long time, a large recruitment of novices to join their ranks, as well as a large army of graduate students to bolster their number. In total, over 100 students have been involved in some capacity over the past 12 months.

In sheer numbers, the achievement by our members has been phenomenal: in the Mays alone, nine boats entered, a collective score of +16, two sets of technical blades and 1 set of blades. So, I thank you, the Boat Club of 17/18, for being the best that you could be. Your presence, enthusiasm and continual improvement throughout has been more that I could ever have hoped for when I took the job on. You are the ones who have made it for me. I couldn’t have done it without you.

Of course, all this would not be possible without those who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Our coaches, advisory committee and junior committee have out in so much time to make this all come together, and I cannot thank them enough for their efforts this year. A final mention to the team, Matthew, Angus and Aga, for everything. We did it.

We go into a new era in 2018/19, with the retirement of Martin Fordham and a new Boathouse manager and coach to succeed him. Martin has left a lasting impression on the Club in more ways than I care to mention, and his continuous presence around the club will be sorely missed by past and present members alike. I would also like to welcome his successor, Paul Townshend, who will be taking up the reins to lead us onwards and upwards through the Bumps charts.

It has been my pleasure and joy to be Captain during this time, I will remember it for many, many years to come. I am delighted to be handing over to Angus, Kate and Ben, who I have every faith will do a fantastic job with the Club they have inherited.

Row Hall!
